Cascadia: A Region Committed to Health Care Transformation

At the Cambia Grove, we are rallying health care across Cascadia around a common goal: to tap into our region's collective ideas, commitment and passion to make the industry more person-focused and economically sustainable.

Thirteen Fortune 500 companies call Cascadia – a geography that in our work reaches from Oregon to British Columbia, Canada, and east to Idaho and Utah –  home. Each reflects our region’s pioneering spirit. Today, more than 100 digital health startups call Washington home. Two of the country’s five largest not-for-profit health care systems also maintain strong footholds in the region. And as these players collide and collaborate, our sector increases its influence on health care innovation nationwide.

“We have all the raw ingredients for a vibrant health care economic cluster. The Cambia Grove is bringing together other health plans, delivery systems, academic medical centers, universities and innovative startups and giving them an excuse to get together, collaborate and solve problems.”

A Seedbed for Innovation

Since the Cambia Grove was founded, we’ve developed effective partnerships with seven Anchor Partners and regional players eager for collaboration. By connecting with the Washington State Department of Commerce, we helped catalyze the first ever Northwest-based Annual Conference for the National Institutes for Health, as well as the country’s first Palliative Care Measurement Summit.

The Cambia Grove also published a 2015 Economic Development report identifying a vital health care innovation sub-sector that is responsible for $6.8 billion in economic output and 22,500 jobs in Washington state alone.

Our region has seen major milestones, like the creation of new treatment options through OHSU's Knight Cancer Institute and new support for Eastern Washington companies interested in the National Institutes of Health’s SBIR/STTR program. Momentum is building behind a wave of investment and strategic alignment among collaborative health plans, providers, educators, researchers, and large employers all working to drive success for our sector.

While other cities boast a bigger concentration of investors (Bay Area), incumbent health care institutions (Nashville) or highly developed industry clusters (Boston), Cascadia retains a focus on delighting with service. Along with its capital, entrepreneurial know-how and a large pool of exceptional talent, this is exactly the mix health care needs to become more responsive to consumers.

As we launch several new digital health pilots a year, we are doing for health care what the region already has done for retail, technology, outdoor and athletic apparel, coffee, aerospace, and timber/manufacturing.

Building big ideas and models that transform industries is one of the region’s strongest sources of pride — and it’s at the heart of what we do at the Cambia Grove.
