Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
At Fred Hutch, our interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists and humanitarians work together to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other diseases. Our researchers, including three Nobel laureates, bring a relentless pursuit of, and passion for, health knowledge and hope to their work and the world.
Together, our researchers are discovering new ways to detect cancers earlier, when cure rates are highest; developing effective treatments with fewer side effects; and learning how to prevent cancers from growing in the first place.

HICOR’s data asset is designed to answer oncology-related research and quality improvement questions by combining clinical information from two Washington state cancer registries with health utilization and cost data from health insurers in the state.

The Washington State Cancer Registry and the Western Washington Cancer Surveillance System collect comprehensive information on staging, initial treatment and survival for individuals diagnosed with cancer. HICOR links data from these cancer registries with enrollment files from Premera Blue Cross, Regence BlueShield, Washington State Medicaid, the Washington State Uniform Medical Plan and Medicare. For matched individuals, HICOR extracts utilization and cost information from health care claims, including inpatient and outpatient service and outpatient pharmacy claims. The HICOR database has information on over 160,000 cancer patients at the time of their diagnosis.
HICOR IQ is a web-based portal that allows users to visualize quality metrics across the spectrum of cancer care in Washington State, from initial treatment to surveillance to end of life care. HICOR IQ users can view standard regional reports or create custom metrics. HICOR IQ access is free for standard reports, with a fee for custom and advanced reporting.
HICOR’s data asset is available independent of HICOR IQ to research collaborators, subject to relevant data use agreements and human subjects approval. Data access fees vary by project.
