Mission/Vision
Lazarus 3D's vision is to enable surgical perfection and this technology helps save lives. Lazarus 3D creates exact, physical replicas of patient anatomy from MRI and CT scan data. These patient replicas are so realistic that they can be cut and bleed. Surgeons use Lazarus 3D models to rehearse their patient's surgery ahead of time, improving outcomes and reducing complications. In July 2021, after years of testing and research, this technology received FDA clearance as the first medical technology to allow surgeons to rehearse a specific patient's surgery before the real thing. They are now also being covered by major medical insurance providers.

In every human endeavor, practice is the key to success. However, until now physicians have had no way to rehearse upcoming surgeries.

Unfortunately, even today, most surgeons learn on the job when they are operating on actual patients, and where any errors can have drastic effects. The only models typically available to physicians are either low fidelity models such as fruits and vegetables, or expensive and cumbersome to use cadavers, which in many cases don't even have the type of pathologies surgeons would need to train on.

For surgeons, nothing can replace hands-on experience. We know that the biggest driver of surgical outcomes and complication rates is surgeon experience and skill. Indeed, a 2018 by one of our clients, Dr. Jihad Kaouk of the Cleveland Clinic, examined over 1,400 Partial Nephrectomies (PN) and found that over 90% of the variance in length of stay, 90% of the variance in positive margins, 90% of the variance in complications, and 90% of the variance in 30-day readmission rates was attributable to differences in surgeon experience and skill rather than differences among the patients themselves! As a result, any intervention that improves surgeon performance can dramatically reduce complications, reduce operative time, reduce costs, and improve outcomes.
Idea/solution to the problem, if applicable
Lazarus 3D provides individual, soft-tissue 3D printed replicas of patients' organs directly from MRI/CT for pre-operative procedure planning and realistic surgical rehearsals. Our patented PRE-SURE technology allows us to create these patient specific models within 24 hours and provides surgeons, for the first time ever, a chance to rehearse their patients' surgeries ahead of the real procedure. Lazarus 3D's Digital Twin models the anatomy and disease state of the patient in a 3D virtual environment. Lazarus 3D's PRE-SURE physical 3D soft-tissue replicas simulate the full range of human tissue. These models can, for most surgical purposes, be treated just like real tissue and can be dissected, filled with fluid, stitched together, stapled, and clamped using the same instruments and devices used in actual operations.

Early evidence suggests that surgical rehearsals can reduce surgical errors, decrease surgery time and post-operative complications, improve outcomes and become the new standard of care for a wide range of complex procedures. The American Medical Association issued medical billing codes for 3D patient-specific models in 2020 and the FDA has granted clearance for Lazarus 3D's PRE-SURE technology in 2021. Lazarus 3D intends to launch PRE-SURE in January 2022 and currently has partnered to centers of excellence to begin the soft-launch of PRE-SURE for patients with all types of genitourinary conditions, including kidney cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, cervical, ovarian, prostate cancers, as well as all congenital and adult conditions affecting the urinary tract/reproductive anatomy.
