Solution
Problem (i.e. barrier, issue, complication, etc.) being solved for the end user
Maternal burnout is reaching epic proportions, 85% of mothers experience some form of mood disorder, 10-15% develop perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD). In fact, PMADs are the number 1 complication of pregnancy and childbirth, affecting 1 in 7 women with a cost to our society of 14.2 billion dollars a year. Maternal mortality has more than doubled between 2000-2014 in the US and mental health conditions are the 7th leading cause of maternal mortality. Mothers are overburdened and unsupported by society. American mothers may be the most stressed in the western world. Their stress and burnout trickles down to their children and families, potentially destabilizing generations to come. Mental health needs to shift from a model of disease management to one of prevention. Supporting mothers particularly in the first 1000 days of a baby’s life would facilitate secure attachment, optimal brain and emotional development of the child. We can prevent innumerable mental health problems in both mothers and babies by focusing on postpartum maternity care and support.
